When I was in my awkward, horrible, teenage years I thought being like my mom would be the worst thing ever, but now it’s what I aspire to. She’s hardworking, caring, compassionate, and tireless, with a dry sense of humor that plenty of people miss (and also a very silly side, as seen above).

I’m still not sure why Sandra Bullock is in this film, but I can get past that. This trailer gives me chills, and it reminds me of one of my favorite Ray Bradbury stories (“Kaleidoscope” from The Illustrated Man). Cuarón has made some of my favorite ever films and I’ll definitely be seeing this as soon as it’s in theaters.

That site has really shown me the value of transparency when talking about money issues, so I contributed with my own experiences in going to a very expensive private school and grappling with the debt I incurred. Sharing experiences is the only way to see how common a situation is, and to truly understand how broken our systems are.

Papers, Please is a compelling, edge-of-your-seat game about carefully scrutinizing forms. And it’s so clever that I don’t even know where to begin. But I suppose you’ll need to know what it is first, won’t you? Papers heralds from Lucas Pope, creator of the similarly socially conscious Republica Times, but this time you’re in charge of your maybe kinda probably definitely fictionalized Soviet homeland’s border. Or rather, you’re the person who makes sure everyone else has their paperwork in order. If you mess up, you get fined, and that means your family withers to chalky bone under the weight of starvation and sickness. Also, there are some very sinister sorts looking to slip past your iron stamping hand of ultimate justice, so perhaps more hangs in the balance than your benefactors are letting on. I know that it’s been cancelled, and all the trend pieces happened like three weeks ago, and I’m only 2/3 done with the first season, but Enlightened is so, so good. Laura Dern is incredible and the writing is perfect. The satire is so on-point and still so sympathetic to its target. I also can’t imagine another show that could not only get away with ending each episode with earnest, introspective voice over, but also have that v/o be so honest and true that it leaves me in tears every time. It’s slow and impressionistic but also genuinely funny when it means to be.

There’s so much I’d love to say about Amy’s earnestness and passion about social issues, and the cringing embarrassment that causes the people around her, how her damage and inability to see herself objectively are so well portrayed and so relatable, how great Luke Wilson is, or how beautiful the score! but it would come across as gushing, and you’d take it with a grain of salt if you hadn’t seen the show anyway. So you should see it, and we can talk about it.
